The right light depends on whether you're shooting a portrait, a film or both. A short guide to when each tool wins.
Strobes win for stills
A single strobe still produces more light per naira than any continuous panel of comparable price. If the deliverable is a still — a portrait, an editorial, a product shot — a strobe with a good modifier is the honest choice.
Continuous wins for film
Video means whatever you set has to hold for a fifteen-second take, not a 1/200s exposure. LED panels — even midrange ones — solve that at a fraction of the complexity of trying to sync a strobe to a rolling shutter.
Hybrid shoots
For a shoot that mixes stills and video, favour continuous. You can always drop the ISO and expose a still against a bright continuous source. Rebuilding a strobe setup on the fly to catch a moving film shot is the harder problem.
